What is test anxiety?

Test anxiety occurs whenever a student is psychologically distressed about an upcoming exam. This anxiety interferes with studying, leads to agonizing testing conditions, and ultimately results in lower test performances. Most students experience some degree of test anxiety before and during exams, and it is totally unnecessary.

According to Spielberger and Sarason (1989) “Test anxiety is a situation-specific trait that refers to the anxiety states and worry conditions that are experienced during examinations." Students tend to experience test anxiety due to lack of preparation, improper time management, poor study habits, failure of organizing test information, comparing with the performances of other students, negative consequences of failure or past performances on earlier exams. Mental causes can be another reason of excessive test anxiety. Whenever a student hold negative thoughts regarding the outcome of an exam, it is more likely for the student to have feelings of anxiety during the exam which continues as a cycle on every exam the student faces in the future; essentially creating a negative feedback loop when it comes to test taking. Physical distress is also linked to test anxiety in the form of lack of sleep, physical overexertion, or illness.

Test anxiety symptoms can vary from mild to severe conditions. Physical signs such as headache, sweaty palms, dry mouth, perspiration, fainting, rapid heartbeat, tensed muscles, upset stomach or butterflies in the stomach can be a symptom of test anxiety. Shortness of breath, nausea or panic attacks can result from severe incidents of anxiety. Many who are affected with this situation are reported to have their mind "blank out" although they thought they were completely prepared for the test. Emotional symptoms may result in low self esteem levels, depression, anger and desperate feelings which can lead to the consumption of alcohol or even taking non-prescribed medications.

Is test anxiety real or is it all in a person's mind?

According to the journal entry of Test Anxiety and Working Memory by Ju Hyun Lee at the University of Iowa “Test anxiety research in the past few decades indicates that highly test-anxious individuals perform poorly when a task is hard or when performance is to be evaluated" (Hembree, 1988). A possible treatment for test anxiety is suggested through deep muscle relaxation and personal development activities. According to Jennifer Baker, Hannah Ainsworth, Carole Torgerson and David Torgerson (2009) who conducted a survey on test anxiety treatments, hypnosis is an effective way of helping students who deal with test anxiety.
